Violence broke out in Kolkata’s Dhapa area on Tuesday during an election campaign led by BJP candidate Priyanka Tibrewal from the Entally seat, triggering fresh concerns over voter safety ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. The BJP alleged that the candidate and her supporters were attacked by miscreants linked to the Trinamool Congress, while the ruling party denied all accusations and termed the incident politically motivated.
According to allegations, Tibrewal was campaigning along with party workers when a group of individuals obstructed the procession and raised slogans. BJP supporters responded with counter-slogans, escalating tensions rapidly. The situation soon turned violent, with claims that attackers used sticks and sharp weapons, leading to scuffles and multiple injuries among BJP workers. Party flags and banners were also reportedly torn during the clash.
Tibrewal alleged that she was physically pushed and verbally abused during the incident, claiming the attack was deliberate and aimed at intimidating voters. She accused the Trinamool Congress of resorting to violence out of fear of electoral defeat and criticised the police for allegedly remaining passive despite the incident unfolding in their presence. She further stated that she had previously alerted authorities about potential troublemakers in the area.
The Trinamool Congress rejected all allegations, with local leaders asserting that the clash was a result of provocation and internal discord within the BJP. The party maintained that it believes in peaceful campaigning and accused Tibrewal of staging the episode for political mileage. The TMC candidate from Entally claimed that the BJP was deliberately creating unrest in different areas during campaigning.
Following the incident, a large police force and an Election Commission flying squad were deployed to the spot to restore order. Six individuals were detained, and injured workers were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The Election Commission of India has sought a report on the clash, while paramilitary forces have been deployed in the area amid fears of further escalation. BJP leaders have also announced a protest outside Entally Police Station.
